What Is A Session Zero?
You’re finally ready to jump into a game with a Game Master or Dungeon Master, but you’re asked to attend something called Session Zero. This is normal and a great way to taste-test the game, understand the group dynamic, gain some insight on the GM/DM’s style, and so much more before the first session. Here are our best tips for jumping into TTRPG Session Zeroes.
In a tabletop roleplaying game, you are making a commitment to playing a game with a long-form story. You are also making a promise that everyone will be able to have fun within the game setting, so you can expect the Game Master to lay out some ground rules for etiquette, expectations on behavior, in-game expectations for roleplaying, etc. If everyone is making a commitment to have a good time, there needs to be a foundational session to put everyone on the same page. This is where the session zero can be extremely helpful.
A Game Master will also be able to help you create your character and assist you with developing a backstory to fit your ideas into this new story as seamlessly as possible. They will also establish session dates, times, and fill you in on special rules that they implement into the game that maybe you weren’t aware of coming in. Session Zeroes are one of the more helpful resources we have in the tabletop roleplaying game setting because it allows the threshold for entry to be lowered for new players and experienced players to come together for a family meeting. You’re able to see faces, hear voices, build rapport, and go through the Session Zero checklist with your trusted GM/DM.
And sometimes you meet a player who is just going off the rails.
